In my opinion, wool is the gold standard for outdoor apparel, and Ibex clearly put a lot of thought into the GOAT lineup. From comfort and style to moisture control and durability, here’s where the GOAT crew really shines:
Thermoregulation
The thermoregulation ability of merino wool is quite astounding. Since it’s wool, you’d expect it to perform well in cold temperatures (which it does), but did you know that it also keeps you cool in hot weather?
The wool fibers are highly breathable, allowing excess heat and moisture to escape. They can also absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture without feeling wet – this ability pulls sweat away from your skin and gradually releases it as water vapor, helping you stay cool and comfortable. Even in 90-degree weather, I felt cooler in my GOAT crew than I ever have in a cotton or synthetic shirt. And the best part is that the moisture wicking worked so well for me that I didn’t have any sweat marks under my arms!
Comfort
The GOAT crew is easily one of the most comfortable shirts I own. It’s light, breathable, and has a texture that reminds me of the athletic shirts I wore as a kid. It doesn’t have the plush wooly feel of my Darn Tough socks, which honestly surprised me, but instead feels slightly more synthetic, despite being 89% wool.
Still, I love the way it feels against my skin, especially when I’m hot and sweaty. Cotton soaks up moisture and feels swampy, and synthetics stick in a way that makes my skin crawl. Conversely, this shirt stays dry and comfortable, so even after a full day outside, I still feel clean.
Moisture Wicking
I briefly touched on this in the thermoregulation section, but merino wool is amazing at wicking moisture away from the skin. It’s peak summer right now, and if I walk outside in a “normal” shirt, I’ll have dark sweat stains under my armpits within 10 minutes.
Not so with the GOAT. I went for an hour-long hike in temperatures hovering around 87 degrees Fahrenheit, and this shirt looked the same at the end as it did at the start. No underarm sweat stains or dappling down the center of my back.
Style
Not only does the shirt feel good, but it also looks amazing! At present, you can get the GOAT crew in one of four different colors: orange, blue, green, and black. My wife and I both went with the green (referred to as “malachite” in the shop) because we like the color and wanted to match, but all of the options are pretty solid.
As far as sizing goes, the shirt tends to be more form-fitting, which is exactly what you want to see in a base layer. The close fit traps a thin layer of warm air next to your body, which is key in cold weather, acting as an insulating buffer.
Antimicrobial
Merino wool is naturally antimicrobial, which is valuable for a few reasons:
- Reduces odor. Merino wool resists the growth of odor-causing bacteria that feed on sweat, allowing you to wear this shirt multiple times without washing. If you’ve ever traveled long distances, gone hiking, or holed up in a tent for a few days, you know how important this is!

- Longer life. Since you can get away with washing merino wool fewer times during the week, you’ll naturally extend its lifespan. Pretty useful, considering the hefty price tag for this material!
All in all, camping, backpacking, and hiking are dirty, smelly affairs that really make you crave a good shower after a few days. If you’re tired of your clothes stinking up the rest of your laundry, merino is the way to go.
Potential Pain Points
I like to say that every product has something that could be improved, and generally speaking, that’s true. For the Ibex GOAT crew shirt? It was incredibly hard to think of anything bad to say, but here we go.
Price
With a shirt as high quality as the Ibex GOAT crew, it’s genuinely difficult to find anything to complain about. That’s why I’m falling back on a tried-and-true pain point for high-end apparel: price.
At just under $100, this might be the most expensive short-sleeve shirt you’ll ever buy. Is it worth it? Absolutely. But that doesn’t make the purchase painless.
A hefty price tag is what you sign up for when you choose merino wool, regardless of which brand you choose. Ibex does a great job of staying within a competitive range – even though it might feel spendy, for the quality and materials, the GOAT crew is actually a solid deal.

At the end of the day, what you wear for your base layer can dramatically impact your comfort and safety on the trail. Any outdoor enthusiast worth their salt knows that cotton kills, and while synthetics can be a viable alternative, they just aren’t that pleasant to wear (in my opinion).
Merino wool is, by far, the best material for outdoor-themed clothing, and few companies do it as well as Ibex. The GOAT crew is soft, comfortable, and stylish, and despite the hefty price tag, it’s something I believe most serious hikers, campers, and backpackers should have in their wardrobe.
