Wazoo Gear Viking Spark – The Ultimate Survivalism Accessory

Nothing makes your outfit pop quite like a good accessory. But aside from aesthetics, don’t you want to wear things that are practical and reliable in a SHTF kind of situation as well?

That’s where the Wazoo Gear Viking Spark comes in. It’s a blade sharpener and fire starter packed into a stylish pendant, and it has officially become my new favorite accessory to wear (and never take off).

Here’s why.

Wazoo Gear Viking Spark Overview

When Wazoo Gear first came across my radar, the Viking Spark was one of the first items that quickly caught my eye. Not only did I like it for its aesthetic value, but I also couldn’t believe that it was possible to hang a whetstone and ferro rod around my neck.

Overall, Wazoo Gear makes a variety of everyday objects that specialize in functionality and reliability. While all of their products are worth looking at, their line of pendants have to be my favorite gear category. Made from high quality materials, the Viking Spark in particular has a lot of desirable features. So, if you’re a fan of rugged, practical accessories, stick around because you’re going to want to hear what I have to say about handy EDC item.

Where it Shines

There’s a lot to like about the Wazoo Gear Viking Spark, but there are a few key areas where it really stands out the most. Here are some of the more notable features:

It’s a small necklace, but there’s a surprising number of components packed into it. Not only can you sharpen your blades with the whetstone (sourced from the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas), but you can also start a fire using the attached ferro rod and striker. For something that only weighs about 2 ounces, that’s not a bad deal.

If you don’t have any experience using a whetstone or a ferro rod, don’t worry, Wazoo Gear has a number of videos to train you in the basics. I’ll put a link to those below, in case you’re curious.

That being said, there are few things that are more important to have in a survival situation than a sharp knife and a fire starter. Since the Viking Spark covers both of those aspects in one, stylish unit, it’s something I can’t recommend enough for any outdoor enthusiast.

There are three components to the Viking Spark: the whetstone, the ferro rod, and the striker. Each piece was thoughtfully designed to create a necklace that any outdoorsman would dream of owning – stylistically and functionally.

In terms of effectiveness, I have no reason to be disappointed. Using a whetstone takes a little getting used to, but there’s no denying that my blades are sharper because of it. And while it’s not as fast as a honing steel, it certainly is a lot more portable.

The ferro rod is also quite effective, despite being somewhat difficult to use. Because it’s so small, it’s tricky to get a good grip on it, but once you’ve got the motion down, it casts some good sparks. It’s also hard to get a good grip on the striker, due to how closely it’s attached to the whetstone, but it still works wonders. And of course, since the striker is blunt on all edges, you don’t have to worry about cutting the leather strap while you’re striking the ferro rod.

I don’t normally wear jewelry or any kinds of accessories, but I have to say, the Viking Spark got me excited to wear a necklace for a change. While I would say it’s mostly a male aesthetic, there’s obviously no reason why a woman couldn’t wear it either. The leather band goes great with most of my outfits, and the ruggedness of the stone and ferro rod (broken in or not) adds a nice, untamed charm.

I find that it pairs best with my earth-colored shirts (like forest green) but you could easily wear it with any color. The length of the leather band is also adjustable, but it does mean you’ll need to cut it down to size. Wazoo Gear has a full video tutorial on how to do this, if it’s something you’re interested in. For me, I like the length it came as, so I didn’t tamper with it. However, it is nice to have the option to shorten the cord if I ever wanted to do so.

Quality of Materials

As I mentioned earlier, the whetstone is made from genuine Arkansas novaculite. The name “novaculite” is derived from a Latin word meaning “razor stone,” and it certainly is a stone that will turn your blades into razors. It has a 600-800 grit equivalent, which makes it a great, all-purpose whetstone.

I’ve picked up a wide variety of blades over the years, so I decided to test them all out on the whetstone to see how well it would work. While it definitely takes more time and effort to sharpen an edge than it would take using a honing steel, I can confidently say that the stone is as effective as advertised. My kukri, in particular, was in need of some love, but now it’s just as sharp as all of my other knives.

The ceramic striker is also well-made, sporting an effective design that’s resistant to corrosion and isn’t likely to break any time soon. And the ferro rod is…well…a ferro rod. Not too much to say about it there, aside from the fact that it’s going to be smaller than what you’re used to using. But, I’ll cover that more in depth a little later in the article.

As Wazoo Gear says, their gear is meant to be used – and that includes the Viking Spark. Considering the components are meant to sharpen blades and start fires, you can imagine how much abuse this necklace is going to take over time.

To some extent, damage is unavoidable. Every time you strike the ferro rod, you’re shaving off tiny, super-heated particles, slowly whittling down the size and shape of the cylinder. With enough use, you’re not going to have much left, and the ferro rod will need to be replaced. Thankfully, Wazoo Gear sells these components individually, so you can use the Viking Spark indefinitely, as long as you buy replacements.

Potential Pain Points

As much as I love the Viking Spark, it’s not like it’s a perfect product. While there isn’t too much to complain about, there is one point in particular that causes my blood pressure to skyrocket whenever I use the pendant in a survival situation.

Ferro Rod is Hard to Use

Let’s be real here… Ferro rods are hard to use, period. And that’s when they’re longer, have a handle, and you actually have decent tinder to work with.

But on the Viking Spark, the rod is only about an inch long, has no handle, and forces you to work around the leather neck strap. The striker is also a little hard to work with since it’s closely attached to the whetstone. Needless to say, it’s difficult to create a decent spark, though it is possible if you keep at it long enough. It usually takes me 5-8 strikes before I finally land a decent spark. A couple of those strikes end up hitting my fingers, but hey, you do what you have to do.

I’ve made a few fires using the Viking Spark at this point in time, so it definitely gets the job done, even if it isn’t the most pleasant experience. As long as you refine your striking technique and use adequate tinder, you’ll be able to get a fire going sooner or later.

Final Verdict

The Wazoo Gear Viking Spark is one your one stop shop for practical, rugged charm. Made from genuine Arkansas novaculite, this mini whetstone pendant is the perfect choice for a versatile, lightweight blade sharpener. And of course, it’s hard to complain about the built-in ferro rod and striker, despite how difficult they can be to use at first.

Overall, it’s one of my favorite survivalism accessories, due to its effectiveness, practicality, style, and the fact that every component serves a purpose. Whether you consider yourself an avid adventurer or not, I think you’ll enjoy adding the Viking Spark to your collection.
